Quoting CNN:

"We owe it to them every single second of the day to be sure we dedicate ourselves to finding out what went wrong," NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe said Sunday. "We're going to find out what caused this, we're going to make sure we correct it, and we're going to make sure this never happens again."

How stupid can you get? If you're going to build high-powered machines in single-digit quantities, fill them with explosive fluids, and pilot them to heaven, some of them are going to blow up! Sometimes commercial airliners (manufactured by hundreds and oriented towards safety rather than performance) blow up, and you think this won't happen with rockets? Deal with it.

Whether manned space exploration is a good idea or not is an interesting discussion, but that discussion can't ignore the fact that sometimes the rockets blow up.
