I’ve written before about the Honen mission in Lahaina on Maui, but I’ll never visit this island without dropping by.

Below, the main sanctuary from the steps leading up to the Buddha’s platform.

Places of worship that are adjacent to nice Pacific-island beaches are, all other things being equal, better than those that aren’t.

There was a service in progress. Sunday isn’t particularly sacred to Buddhists as far as I know, but if you’re an American congregation, you might as well schedule your gathering the same day as everyone else’s.

Anyhow, I crept up to listen to the chanting and the drums; they were magical on this warm March day. While it would have been rude to steal a shot in the door at the worshippers, I did capture a few Buddhist sandals waiting on the astroturf outside.

And then of course there’s the big Buddha; worth a visit and a picture any time.

Next time you visit Maui, I recommend stopping by.
