This year our Yucca has flowered, the first time since we bought the place in 1997. So are all the others in Vancouver.

Flowering Yucca

It’s not that big or that beautiful, we’re not just used to having this big creamy-white bundle of blossoms thrusting up in that part of the garden. I poked around on the Net and it doesn’t say anything about Yuccas only blooming every so often, and it’s quite possible all the others bloom every year and I’m just noticing them this year because of ours.

On the other hand, when I was growing up in Lebanon, there were these really big things called “century plants” that looked sort of like monster Yuccas; the name was because they were said to bloom once a century. That was an exaggeration, because I remember one particular one blooming twice in the eleven years we lived there. Its bloom was proportionate in height to its size, which is to say on a stalk twenty-five feet in the air.
