Sometimes you glance at your server logfile and say “Huh?” Click for the picture; impressive on one hand, irritating on the other. [Update: Eureka! Figured it out; fixed the problem.]

A googlestorm

This will go on for minutes and minutes at a time, pocketa pocketa pocketa pocketa. I guess it’s nice that they like to keep up to date, but this is costing me real money...

I figured it out. I updated the ongoing software yesterday and republished the site. So every entry had a last-modified date (as far as Apache knew) of March 2. Somehow Google noticed this and decided it had to soak up the whole site again right now this minute. Very assiduous of them; so I fixed the software to force the file-updated stamp on the output to match the logical last-update.
