On the #jruby IRC channel, a well-known JRuby committer was heard to utter the following: this is the instance of place which harbors the method we are invoking which may not really be self at point it is calling. And it was in the middle of the day, too.

Yes, but the middle of the day for a developer might be the time they normally go to sleep... inasmuch as one can apply the word "normally" to those such as we.
