This time of year, weeks yet till the shortest day and still it’s dusk so early, and the weather not helping; only today there was light enough for pictures, albeit dark.

Remember that pink hydrangea pictured so dramatically here? It’s pretty well gone, but one blossomlet lingers amid its ruins.

Perhaps our best piece of shrubbery is a Heavenly Bamboo (Nandina Domestica), also featured here previously (scroll down). Its cheery delicate green stands out refreshingly against the autumnal gloom:

If you look closely at the bottom centre leaf in that picture, it’s got a darker-green blotch on it. Look what happened:
